Subject: French

Intent

In particular, we would like all pupils to enjoy learning a second language and understanding the culture and country it originates. At Butleigh C of E School, KS2 study French and learn about France. Learning French is through stories, songs, watching videos, looking at pictures and listening to sound files in French. Most French is listening and speaking but some written French is recorded in French Books. Any opportunities for outside visitors to speak French to pupils is encouraged.

For all children to learn French:

  • understand and respond to spoken and written language from a variety of authentic sources.
  • speak with increasing confidence, fluency and spontaneity, finding ways of communicating what they want to say, including through discussion and asking questions, and continually improving the accuracy of their pronunciation and intonation.
  • write at varying length, for different purposes and audiences, using the variety of grammatical structures that they have learnt.
  • discover and develop an appreciation of a range of writing in the language studied

We aim for Butleigh children to be linguists who:

  • Can speak with good intonation and pronunciation
  • Fluency in reading
  • Imagination in writing
  • Have an awareness of the culture of the country where the language is spoken
  • Have the ability to use the language creatively and spontaneously.

Implementation

In KS2, French is taught discretely by the class teacher. We also try to integrate French throughout the day e.g. using classroom instructions/ commands, as appropriate. We have French books where children can make note of vocabulary and write simple sentences.

Planning

We use the following resources to support the planning and implementation of MFL:, BBC bitesize, Twinkl, and song and resources from Out of the arc.

Impact

Children enjoy French and most children are able to communicate in a simple way confidently by the end of KS2. Children relish telling others about their visits to other countries and their success in communicating with people whose first language is not English.
